Privacy matters, but so does connection to the main home. The suite should be easy to reach without forcing guests to move through private family spaces.
Main-level locations can also reduce reliance on stairs. Bathroom access, closet storage and circulation should be planned together rather than treating the bedroom as the only new room.
Guest Suite vs ADU
An ADU can have a more independent set of living functions and specific local regulatory requirements. A guest suite may remain part of the household without operating as a separate dwelling.
The distinction should be confirmed before adding a full kitchen, separate entry or other features that may change how the space is classified.
