Choose the Door, Wall or Panel Location
Pet doors can be installed in several types of openings, but the location changes the work. A wood door, insulated metal door, wall and patio-panel insert each has a different construction and weather-sealing requirement.
Before cutting, we confirm the product size, pet-door frame dimensions and the material receiving the opening. Glass requires specialized handling and should not be treated like a standard door panel. The best location also needs enough interior and exterior clearance for normal use.
Match Pet Door Size to the Opening
The opening should fit the manufacturer’s frame closely enough that the trim pieces can cover the cut edges and seal properly. Oversizing the hole can leave weak edges or gaps that are difficult to correct later.
Placement height matters too. The pet door should be positioned according to the product guidance and the intended animal, without cutting through structural or decorative features that were not considered in advance. We follow the supplied template rather than estimating the cut by eye.
Frame the Cutout and Seal the Perimeter
After the opening is made, the pet-door frame is installed and the perimeter sealed according to the product instructions and the material involved. Exterior installations need more attention to water and air infiltration than an interior door.
