Mesh Tear, Bent Frame or Missing Screen?
A torn screen can often be repaired without replacing the entire frame. A bent or cracked frame is different because new mesh will only follow the distorted shape and may not fit the window correctly.
The first step is identifying whether the problem is limited to the mesh, the spline, the frame or the fit in the window opening. A completely missing screen may require a replacement frame sized to the opening rather than a repair.
Mesh and Frame Components
Screen repair typically involves the mesh, spline and frame corners. The replacement mesh needs enough tension to stay flat without pulling the frame out of square.
If the existing frame is reusable, new mesh can be installed and trimmed after the spline is seated. Damaged corners or bowed aluminum can limit how well the old frame can be restored, which is why frame condition should be checked before simply rescreening every unit.
Window Screen vs Screen Door
Window screens are removable inserts that fit within the window assembly. Screen doors add rollers, hinges, latches or tracks and therefore have a different repair scope.
