A deck is an elevated framed structure; a patio is typically built at grade. Some projects combine both, using a deck at the house and a patio farther into the yard.
The choice depends on door height, slope, drainage and how the outdoor space will be used. Planning the relationship between levels early helps avoid awkward steps or a patio that collects runoff from the deck above.
Grade, Footings and Drainage
Deck posts and footings need to support the structure below frost and soil movement requirements appropriate to the project. Patios depend more heavily on base preparation and surface drainage.
Water should move away from the house and should not be trapped against foundations or posts. Existing grade can change the number of steps, railing needs and the amount of site work required before the finished surface is installed.
Framing, Surface and Railing Decisions
Deck framing establishes joist spacing, stair layout and railing support before the surface boards are installed. Patios instead rely on a stable base and correctly laid surface material.
