Existing Shower Base and Drain Conditions
A shower pan is part of the waterproofing system, not just the visible floor. The existing drain location, subfloor and surrounding walls affect what type of pan can be installed.
If the old shower leaked, damaged framing or subfloor should be addressed before a new base covers the area.
The opening dimensions and drain position should also be compared with the selected pan before demolition is complete. A pan that does not match the existing rough-in can change the plumbing and waterproofing scope significantly.
Pan Type, Slope and Waterproofing Interfaces
Prefabricated bases and site-built pans use different methods, but both need reliable drainage and waterproof transitions.
The pan must connect correctly to the curb, wall waterproofing and drain. A successful installation depends on the whole wet-area system rather than the pan alone.
Corners, penetrations and the transition from the pan to wall waterproofing deserve particular attention because several layers meet there. The finished tile surface should not be relied upon as the only water barrier.

Drain changes may require qualified plumbing work, while wall tile and enclosure installation belong to their own phases.
