Measure Rise, Run and Entry Constraints
A step project begins with the height between surfaces and the room available in front of the door. One tall improvised step can be harder to use than a correctly planned sequence.
Door swing, threshold height and landing space also affect the layout. The project-specific dimensions should be confirmed before material or a prefabricated unit is selected.
Step Configuration, Landing and Surface
Steps need a stable support surface and should connect cleanly to the entry. Wood, masonry and prefabricated systems create different foundation and weather-exposure questions.
Water should not be directed toward the door or trapped beneath the new step. If the entry requires a larger landing or structural rebuild, the scope may expand beyond a simple step installation.
Step vs Ramp or Major Entry Rebuild
A step is not automatically the best accessibility solution for every user. If a ramp, lift or no-step entry is being considered, the appropriate accessibility and design guidance should inform that decision.
This page covers defined step construction. Wheelchair Ramp Installation and broader Aging-in-Place Remodeling remain separate project paths.
