Sliding or Hinged Screen Door?
A sliding patio screen and a hinged screen door fail in different ways. Sliding doors depend on track condition and rollers, while hinged doors rely on hinges, closers, latches and frame alignment.
Before repair or replacement, we identify the door type and the main symptom. Torn mesh alone may not require replacing the frame, while a badly bent frame can make new mesh a poor investment because the door will still bind or fail to close correctly.
Mesh, Frame and Corner Condition
Screen mesh is only one part of the assembly. The perimeter frame and corner joints need to stay square so the screen remains tight and the door fits the opening.
If the frame is sound, mesh and spline can often be renewed. A bent or cracked frame may need replacement instead. Window screens use a different service because they are removable inserts rather than full doors with rollers, hinges or latching hardware.
Rollers, Hinges, Latches and Repair vs Replacement
Sliding screens should roll smoothly and stay in the track, while hinged screens should swing and latch without scraping the frame. Worn rollers, loose hinges and damaged latches can sometimes be replaced without changing the entire door.
When several components are failing together or the frame is badly distorted, a new screen door may be the cleaner solution. The main patio or sliding glass door remains a separate service and should not be treated as part of a screen-door repair unless both scopes are intentionally combined.
