Interior Casing vs Exterior Window Trim
Interior casing finishes the joint between the wall and window opening. Exterior trim handles a weather-exposed transition between the window, siding and surrounding wall.
Those two locations may look similar in profile but behave differently. Interior work is mainly about fit and finish, while exterior trim also has to manage moisture and sealing. The project should be described by location so the repair is not scoped only from a photo of the visible molding.
Match Existing Profiles and Reveals
A localized trim repair should line up with the existing casing height, thickness and reveal around the window. Older homes may have profiles that are no longer standard, which can make exact matching difficult.
When an exact match is unavailable, replacing a complete logical run can sometimes look better than inserting a noticeably different short section. Corner joints and transitions into sills or aprons should be planned before cutting so the new trim reads as part of the opening rather than an afterthought.
