Rot, Moisture and Soft-Wood Clues
Soft wood is a warning that moisture has reached the frame long enough to deteriorate the material. A durable repair needs more than filling the soft area and repainting it.
The source of moisture should be considered at the same time. Failed exterior sealant, flashing, roof runoff or siding transitions can all contribute. If the underlying cause is not addressed, new wood can be exposed to the same condition after the repair is finished.

Localized frame damage may be repairable when most of the opening remains sound and the window itself still functions properly. Wider deterioration can make a full replacement more practical, especially if the frame no longer supports the sash or seals correctly.
